Anyways, i've been quite busy lately. But, I decided to take advantage of my after hours time at work and experiment with CS5 new painter options. This is what I came out with:

Well, I still have to complete the base and make the first place ribbon, but the big part is done. I'm really happy with the way she turned out. While I find the painting process is my least favorite part of everything, It feels really good once I'm all done and I'm happy with how the paint job turned out.

Ok, enough talk. Pictures!

Process-start to finish. Notice all the changes I made along the way to the head shape. It's a slow process sometimes, and especially when you're basing the sculpture off of a very specific drawing.

If you don't remember, I did a little "keep me sharp" exercise where I drew a picture of a sculpture, then sculpted the sculpture based off of my drawing, trying to keep it as close as possible. Very fun and very challenging!

Hello all!

just a little update-I've been doing some stuff for my personal portfolio. I wanted to do a sculpture mock up using only photoshop. I'm thinking this would be a good skill to use to show potential clients possible options for what their sculpture could look like. I've been itching to draw a cow lately (don't ask me why), so here it is.

Well, here's an in progress shot of him, as of this morning:

I decided to use the color test head that I did before, and merge it with the drawing. The model...didn't really work out so well. Kind of frustrating, but if at first you don't succeed, try something else and make it work.

Wow, 50 blog entries already? How the time flies...

I did a quick color test of my model-in-progress today. As I type this, the head/neck are baking in the oven. This is proving to be a very, very tricky model to build. Mostly because I'm trying to remain as close to the sketch as possible, so this means that my natural instinct of "feeling it out" as I go is somewhat hindered. It's a good feeling, though...and i'm liking what I've done so far as far as the color test.

Anyways, enough talk. Here's what I did today:

Well hello!

here's an in-progress picture for you all...this is the head of my giraffe. I decided his racing name is going to be "He's a horse of course!".

The basic story line is about a jockey who tries to play off a giraffe as a racing horse. The giraffe obviously has an unfair advantage because of it's long neck.

It's been WAY too long since I've posted any updates...apologies! Life here have been a little hectic lately, since I graduate in 2 weeks! EEKS!

Here's the last project for grad portfolio class...it's still in progress. The head is a clay model I did, the hat is something I found at Hobby Lobby and thought would be awesome on her. The hand/chicken are purely digital, which I'm pretty happy about since I've been trying to rely less on sculpey models. There's a certain quality the sculpey gets, though. I also imported my own eyes into this piece. Basically, it's a mash up of every new technique i've tried/learned this year! :)

Hello everyone! I thought you might like to see a piece I did today in Life Drawing 4...it's nice to switch it up and show something non-sculpture related. I think i'll def. want to do more of this technique in the future.

So, here it is. This is a ink drawing done with a bamboo nib and brushes (for the wash). This was a 2 hour pose. Very fun!

Sorry I've been away so long...it's been a busy couple of weeks and unfortunately I haven't had as much time to dedicate to this project as I would like. But, thankfully, it was about 60 degrees here and sunny, so it seemed the perfect opportunity to take pictures and get cracking!

I combined these two pictures together to get the composition/head angle that I wanted:

And this is what I have so far! I still have a lot of work to do, but i'm really liking how it's turning out!

Today I found a drawing I had done in Life Drawing 4 (first picture above) and put it into photoshop and painted over it much in the way I do my 3-D models. I like the results...the guy ended up looking kind of like my dad, but with glasses :)

Have you, dear readers, ever read the wonderful story of Ferdinand the Bull? For those who have not, here is a quick synopsis of the story taken from http://www.hvpuppets.org/shows/ferdinandsynopsis.htm:

Ferdinand is a bull growing up in the Spanish countryside. When the other bulls run and fight with each other, he prefers to sit in the shade of a cork tree and the smell of the flowers. His mother tries to persuade him to run and play, but nothing can convince him to fight with the other bulls.

Ferdinand grows up to be a big, strong bull nonetheless, and in time the men from the city come to the countryside to pick the strongest, meanest bull for the bullfight in Madrid. Just then, Ferdinand sits on a bumblebee and the men from the city see an amazing display of furious jumping and kicking by the astonished bull. Ferdinand is taken in a wagon to the bullfight.

In the city, the people are preparing for the bullfight with a big festival of dancing and singing. Ferdinand finds himself in the center of a huge ring of people shouting and clapping with flowers strewn about everywhere. The Matador arrives, proud and severe, but try as he might, he could not get Ferdinand to fight. Ferdinand, as usual, preferred to just sit and smell the flowers.

Since I loved this story growing up, and since a few of my teachers recommended that I do an illustration from a book that's already been written (since publishers like to see that kind of thing), I decided to illustrate the cover for this book, using my clay/digital technique. I started the model tonight...and will hopefully finish it this weekend. I'm not sure if I want him sitting or standing.

My latest project for Grad. Portfolio is going ok...honestly, I'm so confused about it. On one hand, I want to be able to carry though my original idea and see it to the end, but on the other hand, it doesn't seem to be working out the way I had originally planned. Maybe the thoughts in my head just aren't "dark" enough to make this a night scene, as originally planned. Maybe I'll change the fireflies to butterflies, but then the whole point of my story is gone. I don't know.

I like the look of this technique. It's late, and I'm pretty tired, but I had to do SOMETHING worthwhile today...I was so disappointed in the photos I took for my Grad Portfolio class...they just didn't turn out like I hoped. I'm taking more tomorrow.

what I did tonight instead of homework.

Well, technically this IS homework, but just not homework that I should be doing. Oh well, it was one of those projects where I lost all track of time. i started around 6PM, and didn't look up at the clock until 11:30. I love projects that make me do that.

I decided to try a little something different today. I was inspired a lot by the short stop-motion film, Madame Tutli-Putli (link is in post further down), where they digitally placed real human eyes on the clay puppets, so I decided to try it. For my first time, I'm really happy with how it looks! I'm definitely going to use this technique in the future.

I decided for experimenting's sake, I wouldn't put a lot of time into the clay head. I just needed something to get the general form down. This is the picture I used:

Pretty simple, right? Not too many shadow shapes, etc. Next time I do this i'll be more concienctious of the light source.

Then, I took a photo of myself. PLEASE excuse the ridiculousness of this photo.

Finally, I spent the rest of the time putting in some skin tones, hair, etc, etc. The background's a bit plain right now, but you get the idea. It was mostly just an experiment.

It was a semi-successful day.

Successful because: I was able to take a picture that I could actually use. This picture above is by no means finished, it is simply an in-progress. I like it very much!

UNsuccessful because: I tried to figure out how to do a "screen shot" video, so you guys could see how I do these. After 2 installations of different programs that appeared to not work at all, I moved on. EIGHT HOURS LATER, I realize that it's been recording the whole time, but it will not let me see, edit, or delete the video. FAIL. I'll get to it one of these days...hopefully.

Hello and Happy New Year to all!

I've been in school for a whole week already, and have already gotten some pretty awesome projects. For my first project in Children's Book illustration 1, we have to illustrate a nursery rhyme. I chose "Cat and the Fiddle", and wanted to use my 3-D/digital technique. I'm thinking that i'll find out how to record myself doing this and post it here, as a kind of tutorial. I know that a lot of people are curious about my technique, and it would be better to show you rather then try to explain it in words, right?

So here is the model and the possible pictures I might use for this project. I decided instead of having the cat playing an actual fiddle, maybe he could be playing his whiskers-something a little more fresh.

So, I decided to post my project for my Conceptual illustration class. We were given a quote and a word we had to base our final black and white illustration. My quote was:

"I used to be Snow White, but I drifted" - Mae West

My word was disguise.

My teacher was kind enough to let me do my 3-D/digital technique for this last project. Overall, i've probably spent around 20 hours on this. My goal is to get fast enough to do one of these in a day (model making time included). And being as this is my first sculpture that I've done that has to LOOK like someone, let me just say...it's really, really hard. I think I got pretty close.

Again, these next few images may not be suitable for young children. Please use your own discretion.

The model. Pretty rough, but i've found that when I use this technique, it's ok to have some "rough" edges and any background. I love the light over my oven.

I always see things that I want to fix, but I have to learn to stop messing with it. I exaggerated the arms and angle of her body and other....attributes.

Yeah, like I said. Pretty risque. DEFINITELY a huge step from what I normally do, but it's refreshing to do something different and out of my comfort zone.

I thought you all might be interested in seeing an "in progress". Here, i've pretty much completed the face and laid in all the basic shapes and flat colors. Next step is to add highlights (there won't be much, since it's night) and details. Enjoy!

For my final digital illustration project, we got to propose what we wanted to do to our teacher. So, why not kill two birds with one stone (bad pun!) and get my christmas cards done at the same time? This is the first one of the four that I have to do...I made a little clay cardinal (see below), combine a couple photos for the background, drew my own twigs, etc... I wanted to keep it pretty simple.

It's interesting to see how much the little clay model changes in the final product, isn't it?

If anyone's interested in some custom holiday cards, let me know!

This big-boned beauty knows he's the best of the best. Just look at that stride...how could he NOT be a champion?

This is the first full body armature that i've made, and I'm pretty pleased about the way it turned out. I also used real albino taxidermy eyes, which I think gives him an awesome realistic look! I can't wait to take some "good" pictures of this guy and start painting him in photoshop!!
